Department of Shalya Tantra

The Department of Shalya Tantra has been a cornerstone of the College of Ayurveda at the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Homoeopathy (NEIAH), Shillong, since its establishment in 2016. Committed to excellence in surgical education, patient care, and research, the department plays a pivotal role in integrating classical Ayurvedic surgical principles with modern medical practices.

The department is currently managed by two dedicated faculty members and functions efficiently in both academic and clinical settings. It delivers comprehensive healthcare services through a well-organized Outpatient Department (OPD), which operates six days a week, and a fully functional Inpatient Department (IPD). The IPD is supported by a well-equipped modern Operation Theatre, where a wide range of surgical procedures are performed regularly, ensuring quality patient care and valuable clinical exposure for students.

For academic and skill-based training, the department is equipped with a Yogya Laboratory that provides hands-on training in various surgical and parasurgical procedures as described in classical Ayurvedic texts. In addition, the department houses a fully equipped skills laboratory with advanced models and simulators for demonstration and training in essential procedures such as intubation, catheterization, intravenous (IV) access, and other minor surgical techniques. These facilities enable students to develop practical competencies in a safe and supervised environment.

The department also features a smart tutorial room, enhancing the teaching-learning process through modern audiovisual aids and interactive methods.

A significant milestone in the department’s academic journey was achieved in December 2025 with the commencement of its postgraduate programme, marking a new phase in advanced teaching and research in Shalya Tantra.

With a strong focus on clinical excellence, skill development, and academic growth, the Department of Shalya Tantra continues to contribute significantly to the advancement of Ayurvedic surgical sciences and the overall mission of NEIAH.
